Iraqi Handball Federation
In 1966-1967, the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, University of Baghdad, brought in an expert from Czechoslovakia (George) for the purpose of teaching and training the college team. From here, the beginnings of the emergence of handball began. After that, Dr. Kamal Arif Zahir returned to the country after obtaining a master's degree in physical education in the German Democratic Republic and later obtained a doctorate degree. He submitted a proposal to the deanship of the college to teach handball in the first and second years instead of one year. Dr. Kamal Arif is considered the first president of the union and a pioneer of the game in the country. He showed great activity and worked diligently to spread the game and issued a book in 1968 translating the handball law (7 individuals). The first activity held before the establishment of the Iraqi union was the Baghdad Handball Championship with the participation of 10 teams (College of Physical Education - University of Baghdad / Third Division - Fifth Division - Supply and Transport - Baghdad Education Karkh - Al-Adhamiya Club - Al-Kadhimiya Club - Al-Karrada Club - Al-Mansour Club - Al-Shaljiya Club). The first match in the championship was held on 4/3/1971 between the Al-Kadhimiya and Third Division teams. After the end of the championship, the supervising committee submitted a request to the Iraqi Olympic Committee, and the Ministry of Sports and Youth issued its order No. 103 on 10-12-1972 to form the Iraqi Handball Federation. The Iraqi Handball League was held for the first time in the 1977-1978 season, when Al-Talaba Club won the league title, led by Abdul Salam Sabri.
